The only thing know of this woman was that she was the
mother of Asa Hulsey born in 1773 in Surry Co. NC. Because of the location of
the birth, it is likely that she was of Caucasian ancestry. For Zilpahia Smally
to have been the mother of Asa, her childbearing years would have spaned 41
years, possible but highly unlikely. Thus, the addition of an unknown wife.
Zilpahia Smalley (abt.
1770-1831)
Origin:
Zilpahia Smalley was the child of Joseph Smalley of
South Carolina at the time of her unrecorded marriage to Charles Hulsey III
about 1789 in Greenville Dist., SC. Her mother’s name is not recorded. Based on
the fact that the family moved to AR early and that Charles’s brothers married
Cherokee women, it is possible that she was of some Cherokee ancestry. Whether
he father was of Cherokee ancestry is not known.
Life:
Her first son, Kelly, was born in 1790. Nine other
children were born as she traveled with her husband to GA, TN and AR over the
next 22 years.
Her
father’s family had also relocated to AR about 1812.
She died in Independence Co. AR in 1831.
